Collab overview: Toca Boca's first-ever artist partnership

Toca Boca x Conan Gray is the seventh collaboration the studio has ever run, but it is the first to involve a musical artist — that fact alone is what made it a milestone. Past Toca Boca collaborations leaned on licensed character properties (Sanrio's Hello Kitty & Friends, Nickelodeon's Spongebob Squarepants), which is the comfort-zone playbook for a kids' game. Putting a living recording artist on the Voxella stage was a deliberate brand pivot: Toca Boca explicitly positioned the collab around self-expression, the studio's long-running thematic pillar, and built every deliverable so it slotted into that frame.

The numbers attached to the launch are worth keeping in mind because they set the scale: at the time of the announcement Toca Boca was reaching 60 million monthly players worldwide, and the studio chose this collab as its showcase of a new music-led content strategy aimed at kids and tweens. Why this collab was a brand-level shift for Toca Boca

Three things make this drop unusual even compared to Toca Boca's larger Furniture Pack releases.

1. The first time a real person became a player character

Toca Boca's catalogue had previously stuck to fictional characters — the studio's own residents, Sanrio mascots, Spongebob's cast. Conan Gray is the first human who became playable. Toca Boca shipped multiple "little Conan" character variants whose outfits, hairstyles and accessories were directly modelled on his real-world looks. As Conan himself put it in the press materials:

2. Music as game content, not just a soundtrack

Toca Boca has always used original incidental music. Conan Gray's drop introduced full-length, licensed pop tracks as in-game radio content, playable on demand from a dedicated Home Designer item. That is a content category Toca Boca had never shipped before. The four tracks were not snippets — they were the full studio masters of Heather, Never Ending Song, People Watching and Lonely Dancers, looping in-world and synced to colour-coded musical-note particle effects keyed to each song's mood.

3. A self-expression message wrapped around the items

The marketing copy is uncharacteristically direct about its intent. From Toca Boca senior brand manager Alexandra Svärdh:

That framing is reflected in the actual mechanics: every Character Creator item was free on day one. Toca Boca did not paywall the collab. The gift event likewise dropped items into the Post Office at no cost. The only thing that locked you out was the calendar — if you weren't playing during the eight-week window, you missed it.

The collab ran in three overlapping phases. Knowing the dates is essential because the cut-off line for what survives in player accounts is tied to whether you logged in before August 13, 2024.

The five-day Post Office gift event (June 14–18, 2024)

Toca Boca's standard reward pipeline is the gold gift button next to Packpet's desk inside the Post Office in Bop City — the same button covered in our Unlimited Free Gifts guide. For this collab, the button cycled six themed items across five "days," all wrapped in custom gift paper carrying Conan Gray branding (a black band with a tag bearing the Found Heaven logo).

Each gift quietly referenced a specific Conan Gray release — collectively the five days form a mini-tour of his discography, with the bulk pointing at the just-released Found Heaven. Once claimed they sat permanently on your Rainbow Shelves; the cut-off to claim was August 13, 2024.

The second is a microphone with a tall standee ornamented with rose vines twirled around it, modelled on the prop Conan has used at multiple live performances. Together this pair is the closest thing the event gave you to a complete "perform on your own stage" set-up.

The Character Creator drop: 18 free items, June 18

On launch day Toca Boca pushed 18 new options into the Character Creator at zero cost. Unlike the Post Office gifts these were not time-windowed to a single claim — anyone who opened the Character Creator between June 18 and August 13, 2024 had them all unlocked permanently. The breakdown:

Each piece is mix-and-match — you do not have to dress your character as a literal Conan clone. Headwear 3 stacks with Outfit 6, Eyewear 1 sits on Hair 2, the dimple applies regardless of which outfit you pick. Toca Boca's own promotional shorts during the launch week leaned heavily into this remix-ability, deliberately showing chimeric "your-Conan" looks rather than pure replicas.

The outfit (combined with one of the three Headwear pieces — the crown) replicates Conan's appearance on the album art for the Sunset Season extended play, his earliest commercial release. The Music Player: four full tracks in Home Designer

The Music Player shipped on June 19, 2024, one day after the official launch, as a placeable Home Designer item. The press release confirmed exactly four songs, each playable in full and looped, with bespoke visual particle effects:

The Music Player and the Voxella stage radio both render Heather with gold-yellow musical-note particles — a visual nod to the song's wistful, sunlit emotional register. The matching radio backdrop on the Voxella main stage during the event used a Kid Krow-inspired icon (a crow on a white field) for the song's slot.

A ballad from Superache. The Music Player renders it with slow, dark blue note particles — the most muted of the four songs' visual schemes. The Voxella radio icon for this slot was a heart-shaped bed of roses on a black background, drawn from the Superache album visual identity.

Lonely Dancers Music Player retained

The fourth and final track, also from Found Heaven. The Music Player produces heavy red, orange and pink particle hues here — the most kinetic of the four visual modes, matching the song's dance-floor energy. The Voxella radio icon used a solid black Found Heaven silhouette on a yellow background.

Voxella Festival takeover: the stage, the backdrop, the icons

For the duration of the collab the Voxella Festival Main Stage was rebuilt around Conan Gray. The standard music-themed backdrop was replaced by a Found Heaven-inspired set carrying the album logo, neon-yellow colour treatment and heavy text styling. A dedicated radio sat beside the stage, cycling between the four tracks. Each track on the radio had its own miniature icon, which is itself a tiny piece of Conan album-art trivia:

• Heather — a crow silhouette on a white background, lifted from Kid Krow.
• Never Ending Song — the glowing yellow Found Heaven outline on a grey field, the same logo used on the Day 3 gift lamp.
• People Watching — a heart-shaped bed of roses on a black background, from Superache.
• Lonely Dancers — a solid black Found Heaven icon on a yellow field.

The Open Mic stage at Voxella also received a smaller radio with the same four-track library. Players could place their Character-Creator Conan on the Main Stage, surround the build with the Day 4 microphone stand and Day 1 roses, then loop Heather for a complete in-game concert recreation.

What stayed, what's gone: the August 13 cut-off

This is the most-asked question two years on. Toca Boca was unusually specific about which assets were stage-temporary and which were permanent. Here is the consolidated comparison.

In plain English: if you logged into Toca Boca World even once between June 18 and August 13, 2024, the Character Creator items and Music Player were added to your account permanently. They are still there today, in May 2026. If you never logged in during that window, the items are not on your account and have never been re-released through the regular game.

How to access the Conan Gray collab in 2026

Two years after the end date, players asking "how do I get the Conan Gray outfits today?" fall into one of three buckets. Each has a different answer.

Bucket 1 — You played during the window

The good news: do nothing. Open your Character Creator and scroll — the 18 options are still in your account. Place the Music Player from your Home Designer inventory; the four tracks still loop. Anything you claimed from the gold gift button before August 13, 2024 sits on your Rainbow Shelves. None of this was ever revoked.

Bucket 2 — You started playing after August 13, 2024

The Conan Gray Character Creator items, Music Player and Post Office gifts are not available in the regular app. Toca Boca has not re-issued the collab in any subsequent Gift Bonanza event so far, and there is no in-app shop entry that ever sold the items — they were free during the window only. Watching for a future Gift Bonanza is reasonable but no announcement has been made, and music-licensing rights typically expire with the event, so a re-release of the full music tracks is unlikely.

Bucket 3 — You want everything immediately, no waiting

The unlocked MOD APK build of Toca Boca World ships with every Character Creator option Toca Boca has ever launched — including the 18 Conan Gray items — alongside all 11 Furniture Packs and every Designer plot. It is the only path that lets a 2026-onboarded player access the complete Conan Gray look library without a time machine. The catch is that the in-game Music Player still requires the original event flag to populate the four songs, so this path covers the visual content (outfits, hair, headwear, eyewear) fully but the music library may be partial.

Trivia & easter eggs

A handful of the marketing assets carry references that fans only spotted after launch. Most of these are documented on the Toca Life World wiki and are worth knowing if you are building screenshots around the collab.

• The second Toca Boca x Conan Gray promotional short uses the caption "What a sight for sore eyes" — a direct lyric quote from the chorus of Heather.
• A segment in the same short visually references the title of Conan's earlier track Comfort Crowd — a callback for early-era fans.
• The Day 3 neon lamp is mechanically tied to the same icon family as the Never Ending Song radio backdrop — placing the lit lamp beside a Voxella stage build with that song selected makes the icon shapes match.
• Each of the four radio icons was drawn as a deliberately simplified single-symbol abstraction of its album cover, making them readable at low Voxella-stage zoom.
• Toca Boca shipped five short promotional videos around the launch, ending with the "CALLING ALL LONELY DANCERS" teaser that previewed the Voxella main-stage Lonely Dancers backdrop.

Looking back from 2026, the Conan Gray collab now reads less like a one-off and more like the proof-of-concept for two strategic shifts that became visible across 2024–2025.

First, music as a content category. The four-track licensed Music Player was the first time Toca Boca had ever shipped real-world commercial music as in-game playable content. The studio has since referenced this category as part of its core 2025 strategy, and the Voxella Festival district itself was retrofitted with extended stage controls over the following year, suggesting more artist-led events are part of the long-range plan.

Second, "real-person playable" as a viable template. Conan Gray showing up as 18 free Character Creator items proved Toca Boca could do real-world celebrity content without breaking its self-expression brand promise — because every item was free, mix-and-matchable, and explicitly designed to not force you to play as Conan. The framing was always "embed a real person as one of the versions of yourself you can be," not "buy this celebrity skin."
